Warrawong Book Talk

Book Talk had  its first meeting for the year on February 7th when we discussed the book His illegal self by Peter Carey. In our group we like to rate the books that we read and the ratings for this book proved to be very varied ranging from 4-10. The book scored an overall rating of 5.5. Those that did not like it found it difficult to read as the story was told by differnet voices and they needed to go back and forward to find out who was speaking. Many were disappoionted that they never found out where the boy actually ended up. We wanted him to find his father. Some of us found Dial to be a character that was difficult to figure out, although we did feel that she wanted what was best for the child. But on the other hand there were those who loved the book  and loved the characters, and the unusual langauge especially the descriptions of the bush. Why not try it for yourself.

  1. I was a bit confused by all the characters in the book at the start – because it was difficult to read I think I got confused about who was who. I also thought the woman who took the boy was a very frustrating character. I wished she could have made at least one good decision.
