At last our group gets to read this popular book that has since been made into a movie. The story is set in Jackson, Mississippi in the 1960’s. Skeeter has graduated from college and come home to find that all her mother wants is for her to be married. But Skeeter wants to find out why her beloved black maid has disappeared, and she wants to become a writer. The other two main characters  are maids, Minny a great cook who has just lost another job, and Abileen, a wise woman who is nursing her 19th white child and still mourning her son’s tragic death. These three women come together for a secret project that will put them all at risk, for Skeeter wants to cross boundaries and write narratives from the point of view of 12 black maids. If you would like to be involved in the discussion of this book in our library on July 2nd, ask for a copy at the desk in the library. New members are always welcome to join our friendly group.

Our June book The earth hums in B flat was enjoyed by all the group, who felt it was beautifully written and brought back for them many memories of their childhood. We really liked the character of Gwenni. The book scored 8.5 out of 10
