Hi again! Today Warrawong’s Booktalk group discussed Larissa Behrendt’s ‘Legacy’. We found this book to be an easy read, with some interesting themes. The title of the book, ‘Legacy’ defintely sums it up – a young Aboriginal woman, desperately seeking to understand herself, and ends up learning her identity through her heritage. We thoroughly enjoyed reading a book by an Aboriginal author, and gave the book a 6.5 rating.
Our next book will be Colm Toibin’s ‘Brooklyn’ – Set in Brooklyn and Ireland in the early 1950s, a young woman crosses the ocean to make a new life for herself. Ellis Lacey has come of age in small-town Ireland in the years following World War Two. Though skilled at bookkeeping; she cannot find a job in the miserable Irish economy. When an Irish priest from Brooklyn offers to sponsor Ellis in Maerica – to live and work in a Brooklyn neighborhood “just like Ireland” – she decides she must go, leaving her fragile mother and her charismatic sister behind.
Ellis finds work in a department store on Fulton Street, and when she least expects it, finds love. Tony, a blonf Italian from a big family, slowly wins her over with a patient charm. But just as Ellis begins to fall in love with Tony, devastating news from Ireland threatens the promise of her future..
New members are always welcome, so why not come along and join us in discussing ‘Brooklyn’ on Monday May 6 at 2pm.
