The Open Book meet on the first Monday of the month at 2pm at Warrawong Library. Yesterday 11 people from the book club that have been meeting for over 5 years were joined by 3 newcomers. A very lively discussion took place as each person shared their views on “Never Look Away” by Linwood Barclay. And what polarising opinions there were! The general consensus was that it was a very entertaining read, with many twists and turns (a few too many far fetched ones according to some), however somewhat contrived. Others believed that as far as “whodunnits” go, there are far better writers, especially the Scandanavian ones including Jo Nesbo. Some thought the charcters were a little too shallow, though a couple could relate to, and liked the detective. “Not a memorable read that leaves a lasting impression” was one of the book club members comments, and for her this is quite a priority. Others enjoyed it as if it were a movie, which lead us to wonder whether or not the author had written the story with a movie script in mind? This discussion certainly made us think about what we like to get out of books.
This month The Open Book will be reading Four Fires by Bryce Courtenay. It will discussed at the next meeting on Monday at 2pm on the 2nd September.
